How To Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot ailment that occurs to runners and other athletes, but can also strike people that are overweight or spend a lot of time on their feet. The most common symptom is pain in your heel and the bottom of your foot, especially when you are walking or running. The pain is caused by the inflammation and scarring of soft tissue at the bottom of your feet that normally works as a cushion. A telltale symptom is feeling the pain most when you wake up and step out of bed. To treat plantar fasciitis you can try massaging the area by rolling your foot over a golf ball. Since ice is always helpful in reducing pain and inflammation, you could also try freezing a plastic water bottle and rolling your foot over it. Regular stretching of your calf muscles could also help alleviate the condition. If these home remedies don't alleviate the pain, you might want to see a physical therapist who can provide ultrasound treatment and deep tissue massage. To prevent the onset of plantar fasciitis you should pay close attention to how much support your feet have during physical activity. We have found that many people don't wear sneakers that are supportive enough, of if they do, don't replace them as often as they should. If you suffer from flat feet, ask us about supportive orthotics. For some, such support is also helpful while walking around at home, in the form of supportive sandals.

Last but not least, as with everything else we preach, make sure you are using proper technique when running or playing other sports.
