We've run the gambit on the benefits of exercise, but one factor we haven't discussed yet is maintaining a higher quality of life, especially as we get older. The natural decay of our bodies combined with the modern sedentary lifestyle is a dangerous mix. Just as our balance begins to fade our bones grow more brittle, and the odds of a debilitating injury climb. Not only are such injuries painful, but they also cost us our independence as we have to rely more on canes and walkers, or even family members and caretakers, to get around.
This is why we customize the routines for our older clients to improve their joints and muscles in a functional way that helps them maintain their independence. We also do a lot of balance work because the best way to survive a fall is to avoid it in the first place.
So the next time you are hesitating to come in for a training session or do your own exercises at home, remember that the purpose is not the abstract idea of "being healthy", but to keep you independent and doing all of the other things you love without needing assistance.
